Diffusion sensors have an emitter and a detector built into a single housing. The emitter sends out a light beam (pulsed infrared radiation, visible red light or laser light), which propagates to fill the detection zone. When an object is in this zone and reflects some of the radiation sent by the sensor then detection occurs and the output changes state.
